Hello all!
I hope that I am in the correct section here. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that can help me get some history pertaining to the first Lincoln dealership in Detroit. The Gilmore Car Museum in Richland, Michigan just opened a new section dedicated to this dealership and we are working with them to get more history of the dealership. My great grandfather was the man who originally built, owned and operated it. We have some family photographs and but not a whole lot of information.
Is there anyone who could even point me in the direction of where to look?? Or would happen to know of a good source?
We have been to the Detroit Public Library and looked through some of their old newspapers.
A little information about my great grandfather…
His name was Peter J. Platte. From the years 1916-1931 he built one of the most successful Ford dealership networks in Detroit and the Nation. In addition to owning multiple Ford dealerships, Peter J. entered an agreement with Lincoln Motor Car in the early 1920s to build and operator the first Lincoln dealership in the Nation. Known as PETER J. PLATTE MOTOR SALES, Lincoln, Ford, Fordson, CARS-TRUCKS-TRACTORS located at 3700 East Jefferson and Ashland, Detroit, Michigan. The dealership was built in 1919.
By 1931 the automotive sales became very turbulent and subsequently sold the dealership back to Ford as part of a buy back agreement he made with Edsel Ford.
The dealership was then purchased by A.W. Reitzer.
I know this is sort of a needle in a hay stack but if there is anyone who may know of any avenue to explore, my family and I greatly appreciate it!! Thanks!
