1993 lincoln Town Car headlights***********************

My 1993 Town Car headlights are fogged over. I heard about some kit that can be used to "bring them back to like new". Can this be NEthing near accurate or just an advertising claim? Has NEone got information re: this method? Can just the outer fogged lensbe replaced. That may be to costly.

Got NE ideas re: this subject ?????????????????

There is no magic substance you can put on a fogged up headlight and have it looking like new again. You can sand it down with a very fine sandpaper (5000 grit wet for example), then polish it with an orbital buffer and a good wax. You'll achieve the same effect.

And of course, for less than $100, you can just replace them with NEW. EBay is your friend.

Like all2kool said, fine grit sandpaper works good. I use a compound and rub it in and it seems to work pretty good , out of all the headlight restoration kits I've bought, I've never had one that worked... Most of them are just scams in my opinion, I'm sure they do have some that work but are probably overpriced. Best of luck

I brought mine to a local car accessory shop. Cost me 40 dollars for them to clean up my fogged up lenses. Didn't ask what they did. Seemed reasonable to me. Also installed HID bulbs too. Made a big difference.

Unless you had the correct lenses installed, your HID bulbs are blinding oncoming traffic. The cost would be around $600 to retro fit HID bulbs into a car without the correct lenses. Did you have THAT done?

I was curious about this too as you just can install HID bulbs into a Halogen based system. My guess is that the shop he went to tricked him into thinking he now has HID by installing some higher wattage blue bulbs that will melt his wire housings after time.

My 94 had fogged and slightly yellowed lamps;went to Pep boys and bought a $10 kit from Turtle. 30 minutes of time and it made them almost crystal clear. Then I purchased a set of those silver star bulbs and the diiference was dramatic! At least a 30% increase in output and the perifiral lighting was much improved as well,very necessary as most of my driving is at night in a deer-laden rural area. The kits range in price from $10 to $40,but they all work about the same if the fogging and yellowing is limited to the outer surface that be "sanded" off. I did it about a year ago and they have held up well.

Ironically, today my friend and I were working on his f150, and he had bought a "turtle wax headlight restoration" kit, and I saw first hand that it worked, it was the same thing I think as step66's it was like 10 bucks too, anyway it worked excellent, I'm gonna start using that kit instead of my usual compound rub on my personal cars, that was the first kit I had ever seen that worked so kudos to turtle wax you'll definitely get some of my buissness lol

What I have found working at a Nissan dealer,who charges $95 for a headlamp restoration utilizing the 3M product (excellent stuff) is that the quality of the plastic of the capsules will determine the lasting result. Nissan designs all these funky "innovative" headlamp and tail lamp assemblies,but use the cheapest plastic which fails within 24 months,needing a trip back to the dealer(which is just what they want)Due to the inferior plastic used on these cars,most "restoration" is only temporary. Can you imagine paying $1700 for a stock headlamp capsule? If you own a new Maxima thats what you will pay! Taillights on the new 15 Murano:$2300 EACH! What? is? going? on? here? Consumers who think that new and innovative is worth the price of a 3 bedroom house and then the cost of maintaining a rediculously unreliable vehicle is hip are not too bright! Apologies for the sermon...

I wasn't tricked into anything. I understand that for a true HID system you need lenses to focus the light. For the time being they're a marked improvement over what I had, they're not blue, and i've tested it by driving opposite lane as my car and it's not bad at all. Thanks for your concern.

On a side note for anybody searching a squeaky front end problem, I replaced sway bar links, upper and lower ball joints. Cleared it right up, and she drives like a dream.
