Previously, don't know when, I complained that I haven't had a Sync update since 2011 (Gen1 v. 3.2.3). Someone mentioned that I should contact Rebecca @ Ford to check. She reported that there WAS an update, but it is a dealer only update. I could see big $$'s before my eyes.

Went in for oil & filter (2/27/15) and asked about the dealer only update. Not only did they do it, they didn't charge me! :) They called it 'Goodwill'.
It did totally delete my phone, however, but, I will reinstall phone today (it was -2 out earlier today, but it's up to 17 already. High of 20, so will do it later today)

Needless to say, I'm thrilled; especially since I lost text notifications when I upgraded to iPhone6.

Here's the install as listed on the website: When it came out, I do not know.

Date Confirmed:
Feb 27, 2015

Version:
Gen1 - 3.2.6

Hide detail
BG1T-14D544-AJ

This new software will provide the following enhancements to your current SYNC® system:
- Updated Bluetooth device connectivity
- Improved system stability
- Improved media player functionality
- Enhanced voice recognition capabilities
- Optimized for use with Apple iOS 6 for incoming text messaging
This update includes improvements from all previous SYNC updates such as flattened phone grammar, improvements in device indexing, text messaging capabilities with the implementation of message access profile (MAP), and more. For additional information on previous updates, visit SYNCmyride.com.
Please Read: This update may take up to 20 minutes to complete. About 1 to 3 minutes after you begin the installation, you will hear an Installation Complete message. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR USB DRIVE OR TURN OFF YOUR VEHICLE. You must wait up to an additional 20 minutes until you receive a second Installation Complete message before removing your USB drive. During this interval, while the update is loading, SYNC® will not recognize your mobile phone or media device. Be sure your vehicle's engine is running (not in Accessory mode) throughout the entire installation process. Although your vehicle must be in Park when you initiate the installation process, once the download process has begun, you may drive your vehicle.

Update:

Not quite so happy. :( Text notifications "are not supported on this phone" ARGH! GRRR!
Even though it says: '- Optimized for use with Apple iOS 6 for incoming text messaging'
I guess that didn't carry over to iOS8.

I believe all dealer installed MLT updates are free. With my previous 2011 Explorer, I think the dealer did one update while I did three myself.
As for iOS8, there are a couple of threads in the Explorer IVT Forum. I just have a quick messaging phone so I haven't read them. Not sure if they are of any help.

If no info there, you can always try contacting Rebecca again.

Good luck.

Sorry Pete, neither addresses text notifications, only Bluetooth connectivity, which I do not have a problem with.

FYI, your last link requires a sign-in to the Explorer forum. Rebecca can, however, be contacted through the Sync forums. If the iPhone6 doesn't support text notification, there is nothing she, or Ford, can do about it.

Some how, some way, text notification/display started up again. After about 24 hour, out of 4 texts I've gotten, 3 were 'OK' or 'Yes', and didn't come thru, but a sentence long one did.

Hopefully, it'll continue.

I sent a query to Rebecca this morning on asking about whether the update should allow the text messaging with the iOS8. I haven't heard back yet.
