How can I clean up the buttons? Do they snap out or do ya need some tool? Reason I’m asking is sometimes when I push volume button the channel changes.

Here is a procedure for a 2001 but, it should be the same for your car.

I feel like just replacing the switch altogether is better, especially IF one has to remove airbag to access the switches on the steering wheel...then might as well put in a new switch instead of cleaning it. I just changed mine for the non-responsive cruise control function.

Is this a difficult job? The weird thing is, I can’t find anyone that has that switch. I saw one that was listed for a 2005 but it was not like mine. My switch has Next at the top, Volume in the middle and Temp at the bottom.

I would estimate it about the same as changing out a radio. As long as you follow protocal for disarming the airbag.

Personally I give it at least 10 times the time to discharge the circut. For example if the procedure says 'disconnect and wait 30 seconds' I will disconnect and wait 5 minutes. May be overkill but, that is my extra step.

Reference video on how to remove the airbag from steering wheel:

Very important to disconnect battery, then wait like 30 minutes...once you get the airbag off, it's just a torx screw holding the switch in. Remove and replace the switch....then push back in the airbag. It was fairly simple to do....the most difficult part was removing the airbag, but it wasn't that hard. You don't necessarily need to use a hex key like the video shows, a narrow phillips screwdriver or torx driver works too (as long as it's narrow enough with the angle to fit into the hole).

@Discobee @Babyburr Your Car is a '98-'04, correct? The '05-'11 had completely redesigned steering wheel buttons compared to earlier. I saw a thread on here not long ago regarding these steering wheel buttons. According to the poster, the "old style" steering wheel controls can each be popped out with a blunt knife. Taking less than 15 seconds each side without removing anything else. After removing you detach the electrical plug of each button assembly and then you can put in replacement button assemblies equally as easily. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong?

Mine is 2005, so I have the redesigned button with NEXT, VOL + / - , TEMP + / - like Babyburr described. And the switch is secured down with a torx screw, so I don't think prying it off with a butter knife would work.

My 2004 is the old style and it has the next, vol, and temp buttons as well. I think @Babyburr has the old style? Or did he say otherwise

Ahhh I see, I thought his was 2005 like mine lol.

Edited: Actually I just saw in another thread Babyburr started that said his Town Car is a 2005.
