I borrowed a 96-town car from a friend. I'm fixing some things as a way of saying thank you, one of the problems he mentioned several times is the radio. the radio light says PHONE. and the radio doesn't work till you turn the key to off then the tunes com on. or if it times out, then it shuts off or if opening the door, it turns off. I checked a few posts on You Tube and other blogs and was told to check the phone modular in the trunk right side. said; To unplug it, if it doesn't turn off right away, then go to the radio fuse and disconnect for 10 minutes. it should reboot the radio. well. I went to the trunk and found the module was missing all together. so unplugging wasn't and issue to do, then I went to the fuse box and disconnected for "20" minutes to assure enough time [ I'm thinking it has a small batt in it to keep the microchip going to keep the selection information available, I fired it up again and the same things occurred. ditto!
Does anyone have an issue with this. or experienced it and found a solution. it's a Lincoln factory phone in the center arm rest [ hand piece no longer in the armrest] the phone plug is just like a house phone plugin, that's because the phone is analog that is not used anymore, so likely the previous owner had it removed, but were not sure if that is the cause for the radio going into default. or if it can even be fixed. I found someone saying on a blog, the module missing could be the default issue. since he isn't sure, I need more definitive answers. I'm hoping someone says cut the yellow wire and problem solved. I asked two mechanic 40 years' experience, owners of shops. one knew that model had a factory phone but knew nothing of its function and the other knew nothing, that car even had a factory phone and Hes 35 years in the business. neither one was factory nor Lincoln line mechanic, so never exposed to the brand on a regular basis. thanks for whatever information you can give even guesstimates! thanks jpr
