My Lincoln
2000 Signature
Please tell me if you're aware of issues like the ones I'm having ... my engine loses power while driving and the engine misses and races. In neutral, if I give it gas and then take my foot off the gas, the engine abnormally continues to idle at a high rpm for a while.
Have any of you experienced this issue with your Town Car built during that time period ?

When you are posting the DTC codes do include the mileage on the engine.

Have you checked for any trouble codes? if so, post them here
Hi thanks for answering ... I took it to my mechanic and he hooked it up to his computer but no codes came back. He and I were wondering if water may have gotten into my computer over time and is causing some internal damage ?? A different mechanic I spoke with suggested it might be a problem with the PCV valve or the wind sensor on the air intake ??
Sorry it took me until today to reply ... I changed the site settings to send me notifications now

If the engine is running and there are no codes (hard to believe) then the PCM aka the computer is working well. If the PCM had problems like water gotten internally there would be lots of codes and-or a no start and the Check engine light does not prove out during the start up process.

BTW water into the PCM occurred on a number of Ford vehicles because of placement under the rear hood opening area.

If no codes the electronic sensors are good. The issue you have is non-electronic engine control related. (Because you have no codes)

Possible non-engine control or sensed problems
Vacuum leak, just not a big one to generate a lean condition that is picked up by the O2 sensors
Air intake restriction - dirty air filter
Fuel restriction - dirty fuel filter
Mechanical issue with throttle body operation

If moisture has gotten inside of the ECM over time you would see the evidence of moisture on the board.

The gauge issue is more than likely a grounds issue or the ECT sensor is possibly bad.

You may have a short to ground issue within the engine harness somewhere causing the engine issue

Hook up a good code reader to the OBD2 port. Look at the readings for engine coolant temp and short term fuel trim. If ECT sensor fails engine will run rich and idle high. Good code reader might cost you $50.
