Lincoln Town car 1981
Hello Lincoln forum Members,
I have a 1981 Town Car with electronic instrument panel, it was used by an embassy in Paris during eighties and early nineties.

After many years without running, I made tune up, replacing oil for motor and gear box oil, brakes liquid and hoses and radiator water and hoses, spark plugs..., I also had to change the tank rusted inside and fuel pump.
I finally managed to start motor but the after many minutes the motor stalls and it was very hard sometimes impossible to start again during a while.

Gradually I decided to change many things like crankshaft position sensor, ignition coil, ignition control module, Engine Control Module, the engine control module calibrator, the fuel injectors, map sensor, I verified throttle position sensor, fuel pressure regulator.
However the problem is the same, the motor starts and stalls after a moment, if I tried to put in drive it can t move more than some feet before stalling.
The mystery remains !

If the tank had rust, was fuel filter changed?

The aftermarket parts quality is not so good lately. Anything you replace that is electrical in nature should be an OEM Motorcraft part.

If you used any aftermarket brand parts I would go back through those and test

When the filter was replaced was there debris (or rust) in the old filter?
Was the filter replaced before or after the tank was replaced?

No debris in it

You are right, I have seen the poor quality of some aftermarks parts, some relays had needed to be replaced again.

The problem comes from injection, the voltage is too low. Measures are one or two volt whith key on and two or three volt when starting. The positive wire with a ground indicates 12 v, but not with the two other wires. The problem seems to come with the ground. The ground of the ECM metal box have been tested too, it is good. Then there is maybe something bad in the ECM or in the wire, however ECM had been replaced. I don't know.

It's possible that a solder joint is cracked causing an issue. You could take a heat gun to the board, gently heat it up a bit and test run it to see if the condition improves

The entire electronic engine control system operates on 5 volts. Less than that is an issue.
