As some of you may know/remember I have the Ed Taylor Limited Town Car (see thread) and this year mostly due to cosmetics I put in new headlight assemblies as it is now a summer pleasure cruiser that I will be insuring as a historic vehicle once I get my appraisal done. I decided to put the HID lights in my 06 Sig Ltd daily driver as the assemblies in that car were not great and the aiming pin didn't work as one of the lights was way off. I knew the HID lights were properly aimed as they were factory lights. They were still in good shape for their age, no hazing or yellowing.

What I did first was to reseal the lights as one of them had started to leak. I thought of using silicone but realized it was going to be messy so I used electrical tape that is pliable and taped all the upper part of the assembly and the bottom rubber, making sure to cover the front part where the lens connects to the assembly housing. Then I put a layer of clear packing tape over the electrical tape. as a top barrier. It worked well and they do not leak. I had done the tape thing with the other assemblies I took out and after 3 years of daily driving it was still good. As time marches on if it needs a refresh a little strip will do. It's not pretty but effective.

I really didn't want to spend hundreds on new ballasts and bulbs so I went the Amazon route. It was about 1/4 the price compared to aftermarket. The Dorman ballast at RockAuto was $200 (Canadian) and I paid $55 on Amazon. Both units made in China. Same with the bulbs. $30 for the pair vs. $70 for the Phillips for one. I will roll the dice on the longevity going with the no name made in China stuff. The HID lights are very bright and I don't notice any difference between these and the OE lights that were still in them. One of the ballasts pooched out when I plugged them in initially to test them, so I just replaced both ballasts and bulbs. I replaced the rest of the bulbs in the units with standard halogen bulbs. I don't drive a lot at night anyway so I am hoping to get at least a few years without having to do anymore maintenance.

Here is the info for anyone who is interested for the bulb and ballast.
