Hello All,

I was hoping to get your help with an issue that I'm having. I've had transmissions problems on my Lincoln LS V8 2003 (135K KMs on it). I went to a transmission shop and they had to rebuild my transmission. 3 days later, the car was out of the shop with a new rebuilt transmission and no more transmission problems. (and 2K less in my pocket)

After driving the car for about 1 day the car started idling rough and 15 minutes later the "check emissions" light came on (steady solid). I contacted the transmission shop to find out if it's related to the repair they have done (considering that the only error code I had on the car before I took it for repair was the transmission error) and they asked me to come in so that they can hook it up to the computer.

They told me that the error codes (P0308 and another one about engine misfire) were not related to the transmission repairs and I now have to take it to a regular mechanic for additional repairs.

I went to a regular mechanic and they told me that most likely the COP (coil on pack) is bad on that cylinder (8) however they won't know for sure until they replace it and see if the problem comes back.

I was given 2 approaches:
1. Replace only the broken COP and spark plug and save some money
2. Replace all COPs and Spark Plugs since the COPs are probably old and worn anyways.

I did some research on the net and most people recommend that I replace all COPs and spark plugs to eliminate any more issues and repeat visit to the mechanic.

I asked for a quote, to get an idea of the costs involved, and I'm looking at another $1K+. (that is if I go ahead and replace all 8 COPs (each quoted at $115) + $15/spark plug + labor).

I was looking on e-bay to see if I can find COPs at cheaper costs and I did find it substantially less (about $200 for all 8 once all the taxes and shipping charges are added - http://www.ebay.ca/itm/8-IGNITION-C...:Lincoln|Model:LS&hash=item1e79e8be35&vxp=mtr)

I'm no mechanic but some things didn't sit well with me and I was looking for your guidance

1. Is it too big of a coincidence that my COPs went bad a day after my transmission was repaired? Should I blame my transmission technicians?
2. Upon a visual inspection by myself I noticed "dirty oil" sitting on top of the engine on the driver side which leads me to believe that I might have another leak somewhere. Should I be concerned about this too or is this related to the COPs being bad?
3. I also noticed that the rough idling corresponds with a "clicking" noise that comes out of my rear passenger door speaker that only started when the rough idling started. The "click" imitates the rough idling of the car which makes me believe that a short may be generated somehow (but I'm not electrician/mechanic to make that assessment with 100% accuracy).
4. In addition, as I was driving to the mechanic to get this checked out, I started smelling a foul smell coming from my car. Not sure if this has anything to do with the COPs or the catalytic converter.
5. Does anyone have any experience with these COPs ( 8 IGNITION COIL Ic165 DG515)? I want to make sure that I don't buy something that would be cheap and breaks in the first 6 months.
6. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Can anyone help me understand what's going on with my car?

Your Help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adrian
