yeah i have the 400. im planning to remove all the emmissions stuff so the diagram will help know whats nessassary. should the vac advance go to manifold or carb vacuum?I have the vacuum diagram (ESSDS) sheet for 9 17F R1 which is a 1979 400 engine.
Is that what engine you have?

so i should leave the egr be and repair it if need be? what about the thermactor air injection? from my.understanding that only effect the exhaust gases and emissions and not the engine running right? renoving the airpump and all associated components to clear up the engine bay wont effect engine performance?Distributor vacuum advance signal comes from the carb.
From the early 1970s the vacuum advance signal was routed from a PVS valve. When coolant got too hot, the PVS would switch to vacuum advance and this would kick up the idle speed. The higher speed moved coolant and cooled the coolant.
Removing some of the "emissions stuff" will cause the engine to run poorly at certain times.
As an example, without EGR the engine will run lean at speeds greater than 35 or 40. Which usually causes spark knock.
