My Lincoln
2001 Lincoln Town Car Signature series
I’m new and thanks for letting me join! I bought a beautiful 2001 Town Car with 111,000 miles. I have drove several of these cars and love the smooth ride and comfort! However this one has an extreme amount of body roll..btw.. someone has converted the rear air ride to springs and shocks. I replaced all the shocks which the fronts were factory and the rear was off brand, this made little to no improvement on the body roll. So I’m thinking of spring replacement

Any thoughts or ideas of a different set of springs to use that would keep the ride but reduce body roll?? Thanks in advance!

Welcome.
Does it have front and rear anti sway bars already.
If not, they will help.
I believe it has one in the front I’m pretty sure there is not one in the rear

Springs new or old do not increase or decrease body roll. Springs do create body roll. because the body is suspended on top of springs. You seek control of the body movement in top of those springs.

The suspension pieces that limit body movement or vehicle movement when the vehicle is moving are shock absorbers and sway or stabilizer bars. Stabilizer bars provide control in turns or when turning. The shock absorbers control up and down movement of the vehicle independently in each position. Adding a bar in the rear if none exists will provide more control of vehicle movement.

The only other thing that needs to be inspected is the suspension in general for loose or missing bushings and/or fasteners.

Spring replacement will change ride height only.
Different types of suspension designs can have other controls too, however changing the suspension design is more or less out of the scope of what most owners would consider.

If you can get sway bars off a cop car of the appropriate year, it will help quite a lot. There may be larger aftermarket ones available as well. There is some impact on ride quality in certain circumstances but the trade off is worth it imo.

A 29.5mm front and a 21mm rear stabilizer bar, if you can find one, will tame the roll a bit, but not fully.

Some factory bars were hollow.
A solid bar has greater control when turning

The sway bars will help but if your springs are worn, it will be counteracting that issue. If you wanted it a little more spirited, the police spec springs will help as they a slightly stiffer spring. The added weight of a Town Car plus a tire with a not aggressive sidewall won’t affect ride much but will take out the excessive float. I did this setup on my ‘08 civilian CV with Mustang 18” wheels and is controlled but no means harsh. I’ll probably do it on my ‘10 Continental Town Car as well.

Larger stabizer bars do help, I run the front 29.5 - rear 21.5 (22?) on my 2010 and while the rear has common mounting points from 98 to 2011 the front bar would have to be from a 98 to 2002 model which might be a bit harder to find these days.

You can get Addco sway bars for a crown vic. This is the same platform but your Linc is a little longer. I have 1 1/4" in the front and 1" in the rear. KYB 551602 struts will help. They are the police ones for crown vic and they will take out the "float" leaving you more stabil. The 551600 will match what you have.

I did Motorcraft and had them leak in 3 months. Very disappointing.
