Hey guys, I have a beautiful 97 Town car and it seems the air ride has a leak somewhere. After being parked in the driveway for a night the rear end will be sitting on the ground. When I turn the car on it it pumps back up to normal level.

My question is does the pump turn on even when the car is off to level itself out? and if so why is it not turning on when the car is off to level out?

I thought Ive heard the pump come on before when the car is off.

Thank you

When you switch the ign off and leave the car for the night, the suspension module can make adjustments in ride height to the trim level within an hour. After this the suspension module lowers the trim height about an inch or so and if the system is in good repair the car will stay there until you turn the ign on the next morning when the suspension module turns on the compressor and opens the spring solenoids and raises the car to trim height. If the springs have a leak then the suspension continues to lower overnight, but the compressor will not run.

To identify the leak, have the suspension at trim height, turn off the suspension switch (avoids venting the air from the springs as suspension raises) jack up the rear of the car (both sides) and put axle stands in place. Spray soapy water all over the springs and the solenoids looking for bubbles that show leaking air. The usual area for leaks is cracking of the rubber at the bottom of the spring where it is normally folded under. If leaks are found then replace both rear springs promptly to minimize wear on the compressor.

We have some tech articles on spring replacement, and a good video if I can find it.

Good luck.

Your pump comes on once about an hour after it's off to self-level. Just once. That is normal. If it is "on da ground" in the morning, you probably have worn out and leaking air springs. If you don't fix it soon you will burn out your pump, as it will keep working all day as you drive around. Installing new air springs is pretty easy and doesn't cost too much. Once replaced they will probably last another ten-fifteen years

Hey guys my 97 Town Car is sitting on on its butt. I drove it for a long time with leaky air springs. I have new air springs now for about 8 months. Problem is car sank to ground in about 5 minutes the other day and compressor won't kick on. I checked for power at compressor and there is power. I guess my question is do I need any special knowledge to change the compressor? It looks like it in bolts from under the car. Any advice or tips would be tremendously appreciated! Safe Driving

Air Suspension Pump Question 97 Town Car

Can anyone tell me if I need any special tools or knowledge to replace the air pump in my 97 Town car. I had a bit of a time finding it. Now i found it, tested for power. Power is getting to it so I guess the relay is doing its job so I decided to order a new one. it'll be here tomorrow. If anyone has any tips on replacing this part let me know please. It looks like it bolts from the bottom but I cant see where. haven't gotten under there yet. will this evening though. again any advice would be appreciated. I fix newspaper printing presses, not cars. however, i think i can do it. Happy Lincoln Driving. - FM

Nothing special.

In the Lincoln Tech form is this article on a 1998 model that will help you with some aspects: http://www.lincolnforums.com/forums/threads/10647-Town-Car-Air-suspension-compressor-drier-service particularly the connection of the air line that runs from the compressor drier to the air spring solenoids at the rear of the car.

Attached is the procedure to replace the compressor on your 1997 Town Car.

Do you need any help replacing the air springs?

Good luck.

Thank you so much. I think the help you give me and others who try to scrape by with a couple of kids can not have a price put on it. Thanks so much.

Your welcome. Hope it all works out so an update would be nice.

Good luck

Compressor is working. Thanks everyone, especially "Town". Unfortunately the short drive home was e nought to tear on of my air bags which was only 6 mos. old. As it turns out, problem was with ride height sensor. Going to keep new compressor, just got new set of air bags and a used sensor in the mail today. The saga continues. As soon as I get some shade I'm going to install bags and sensor. I'll keep you posted. Again, thanks so much! - fmonthefly
