I have a 2015 Lincoln MKZ with aluminum alloy wheels that are corroding. It looks like white stringy snot on my wheels. How can I get rid of it? I think there is also a clear coat on top. I’ve seen one suggestion of using some solvent to remove the clear coat..... then I could do something to the corrosion..... but I don’t want to damage /scratch the wheels. Any ideas?

Hi Nancy. The wheels need to be refinished. That will entail the removal of the clearcoat paint, the wheels being re-polished, and then a new clearcoat applied.

You can find companies that repair/refinish wheels by Googling "Automotive wheel repair near me".

If you want to try and do it yourself, you can find information and How-to videos by Googling "Refinish aluminum wheels": refinish aluminum wheels - Google Search

Here are some videos: refinish aluminum wheels - Google Search

I only Googled but did not watch them, so am not vouching for the information.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

bbf2530 is correct for best display , however if its too expensive, you could look for a set of good replacements on facebook marketplace, craigslist or at your local junkyard. If those are still too expensive, you could do what these guys did on Youtube. There are many of vids showing how to restore aluminum rims with simple hand tools and spray paint/clearcoat. Anyone can do it, however its a lot of work and there's no paint I know of that replicates aluminum or chrome. The best I've tried is Krylon Chrome K010101A07 using a gloss black basecoat which looks like a very high sheen silver. There are chrome / aluminum hardened coatings which are pricey and even chrome / aluminum vinyl wraps which don't last very long.

I to have the same problem on my 2011 MKX rims.
was in touch with a restorer and would be $350 (Canadian per Wheel) or
stripping, repainting and clear coating for $275.
