To all,
I have 1997 Lincoln Continental with 148,000 miles. The car has run great until the transmission went out. I had the tranny rebuilt and ever since I have had nothing but problems. The car shutters during acceleration at around 40 to 55 mph. If you are driving and start to go up a slight incline the shutter will start. It seem that it does this with a light load on the car. Once it start you can give the car gas and usually goes away. Over the last few months it seem to be getting worse.
History
After the tranny was rebuilt the car did not make it home before I had to have it towed back. The tranny guy did some repairs and I was on my way. The problems start shortly after the second repair. I have had it back for testing and was told it was an engine performance issue. At this time I also lost my fuel pump and had another shop replace it. I have taking the car back to both shop for diagnostic and both say the problem is not the part they fixed. Both the fuel pump and tranny test good or at least according to the service manager in the shops.
I have then took the car to a Ford Dealer and they could not pin point the issue but said the engine mounts may be the issue. Not that I doubt them but as hard as this car jerks at time I feel there is another issue as I cant imagine the engine mounts would prevent this jerky shutter from happening. I can see where it may make it not feel so bad!!
After dealer I took the car to another tranny guy. He hooked up his computer and test drove the car. The car jerked as bad as it had any other time but he could not pin point what the cause could be. His computer showed the engine performance issue. The tranny showed torque converter slippage but he could not determine why this was happening. He indicated to me that he has never experienced an issue as bad I was having and this was not the normal shutter people have had in similar cars.
On another note I purchased a ODBII diagnostic tool and every once in a while I do get a SEL and the code end up being P0743 Torque converter clutch circuit electrical. This code only show up once or twice a year.
So here I am with know answers and not one shop that is willing to pin point the issue and try and fix the problem. If anyone else has had an issue like this and has great input I would love to hear it.
