My Lincoln
2018 Navigator
Hey everyone! So I have a rattle that comes up after long drives and stays for a couple of days then goes away once I go back to normal, everyday driving. So it’s kinda hard to make the dealership have to figure that out, but if I can just find out where it’s coming from and tell them where to look it will make me not want to pull my hair out.

Some history, it’s from 2018 built in April, and so far the transmission was replaced (metal shavings) I think the previous owners didn’t take care of it and never replaced the tranny fluid or didn’t use the parking brake enough (who knows). I’m still in the works of calling all the old service centers in the Lincoln way app to get past service records.

The next little, big thing was a small coolant leak, but from my experience with Land Rovers it is better to replace ALL the coolant pipes even if it’s against the mechanic’s advice…I don’t want to pay for the labor of opening up the car twice for the next leak.

Fast forward to summer time, went for a Florida trip down south and I noticed the tranny temp getting too hot, the radiator fan barely able to catch up, and the this rattle sound that you can hear and feel, so much so that you can feel it hit underneath your feet in the drivers seat or at least that’s the amount of force that is generated. No dealership around the southern east coast could take it in because of how booked they were, which I understand, my dad was a mechanic so I have patience and respect for everyone of them (whether they are awful or unbeknownst engineers).

Anyways instead of being stuck in Florida, made it back home without anything overheating and dealership replaced the water pump, a transmission coolant pipe (like what?), and the temperature sensor.

After all that, the vehicle drove brand new and all covered under the ford extended warranty except for the coolant pipes which I bit the bullet of $1400 for, but better to have peace of mind and it was time for a coolant flush anyway especially since after July of 2018 Ford started using the new coolant for their vehicles.

Fast forward to November, going up north to enjoy the yearly snow sporting and after about 45 minutes of driving at about 65 mph does that bothersome rattle and banging come back. I had an 8 hour drive straight up and I was stocked with Dr.P so I started experimenting to see what could be the reason.

Keep in mind I was in 2A the whole way, and I did stop for some gas but that was it.

The bang underneath always comes after the rattle, almost as if something needs to catch onto something hence the bang.

Makes me think maybe:
  1. wheel bearings
  2. driveshaft
  3. transfer case
  4. Cv joint
  5. Timing chain(but I think that was changed with cam phasers)
  • Nothing noticeable in rpm when the rattle and bang happen
  • It doesn’t favor a speed range…
  • BUT if you change speed drastcially or frequently let’s say your passing through NY, CT, and MA (different speed limits and I forget to mind them in cruise control) it does come back intermittently and when it’s most intense.
  • Happens whether cruise control is on or not.
  • Still happens when speed is constant, rattle and banging underneath is still there but dampened.
  • Bumps don’t affect it, especially when you’re passing through New Jersey.
  • Tranny temp was a constant 187 all the way up.
  • Once we got to our destination it lingered for a couple days even in short drives (to avoid overpriced resort food).
  • Nothing noteworthy on the way back down, but same observations.
After being home for a couple of days the rattle and bumping underneath is gone and only comes back when driven for more than 45 min and going over 65mph.

It makes me think it’s something that gets hot enough or overused enough that it acts worn out or is not greased/lubed/filled enough. It has felt like as each problem or issue was taken care of it’s has removed some variables that would exacerbate it and make it more frequent. Like why would it go away from everyday driving once the water pump, temp sensor, and transmission coolant pipe are replaced(maybe one of them)?

Anyways I just want my vehicle to be safe on long trips and I love it for them, feels like you’re flying first class.

…was going to post this in December but discovered an oil leak…

Had the timing chain cover changed (it was leaking) and went for second snow-sporting trip and I was so very hopeful that it was the culprit, BUT the moment that 45ish minutes came along that dreaded sound came back, I felt a little defeated. So I had a crazy idea to change to 4h (4x4 auto) at the first gas fill and the sound went away! BUUUT there was a really loud humming noise coming from the right side of the car which made me worried that other parts of the nav are being pushed too hard to compensate for the rattling&banging issue. It could be the IWE system, but it’s odd that it’s causing more issues (or revealing them).

I’ll keep you all posted once I take it in, it needs the front and rear cameras replaced *sigh*. Still love this thing though.

Also:

If there are any past service techs or if anybody knows what “inspect and lubricate mean?” In the vehicle instruction manual?

I wonder if maybe some of the routine maintenance is or has been “skipped”.

Like for example I wanted to replace the tranny fluid at 69k and they said they would look at it beforehand…then they decided to replace it. Makes me wonder if I ask them to replace the transfer case and front&rear drive axle fluids will they further diagnose and find the culprit….
