So I had the MKT at the dealer for timing chain noise and the report said the rear shocks were leaking and not covered under warranty. They wanted $500 to replace two shocks I am sure most of that is labor rate. Anyhow I am handing with tools and do most of my own work, the problem is I cannot find a procedure for accessing the top nut for the shocks. It appears the rear panels have to come out but I can't figure that part out.

Any help or direction to look for a procedure would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ira

Hey there... search for shock replacement for the Taurus/Explorer/Flex/MKS since they are more popular vehicles on the same platform. I do believe you have to access the nuts from the trunk. That price sounds about right.

Good Luck

Thanks, I have seen tons of videos for the other models. The Flex has two storage pockets that can be removed to gain access to the upper nut. It appears on the MKT the entire side panel has to come off to get to that nut. Maybe why the dealer wanted so much to do it. My wife might have to drive another vehicle to work while I take those panels out. I haven't been able to find any instructions for panel removal either. They seem to be one large piece from the C pillar back to the rear hatch.

Thanks again.

$500? They must be some shocks.

That's for stock shocks. Nope... Dealer rates are not cheap. We still want our cars to run correctly; therefore, you pay to play. And don't forget the alignment.

Yeah, I am in the same boat. Rear shocks are toast on my MKT. Always have worked around cars and have the tools / experience. Dealerships around here (northern CA) want around $600.00 to replace the rear shocks only. No alignment after. Tools to remove interior plastics are cheep as well as any replacement plastic fasteners that might break when removing....this must be a PIA job if they are getting that much. I think Tirerack sells the OEM shocks for about $100.00 each.

Was here hopping to find a written or video illustration on how to do it myself....

Must be a PIA job. Why don't you get a quote from local garage or chain stores (Firestone/Goodyear/Midas, etc)

Are the shocks different? Whats with the lincoln Drive control? Does it make the shocks more expensive/Unique?

Rock Auto has these pups for $76.79 each (Motorcraft) and far less for the Monroe and Gabriel shocks.

Would not call it expensive at all compared to what kind of weight these shocks deal with..
