My Lincoln
2001 navigator
Hey guys, my 2001 Lincoln navigstor has all of a sudden started acting like it’s in low 1 but also neutral. For an example I could be driving it not foot on gas or break and all of a sudden it acts as if it’s in 1st gear and as I give it gas it acts like neutral. It sounds like engine breaking.

Hi Shyrosier and welcome to the Lincoln Forums. Blind Internet diagnosis often has definite limitations. This is likely one of those cases.

That being said: It sounds as though your transmission may be failing. How many miles on the vehicle? How long have you owned it?
Have you ever had the transmission serviced while you have owned the vehicle? Fluid change, filter change (if applicable) etc.?
At this point, all you can really perform as self-help would be to check the transmission fluid for proper level, color, odor etc.

If it is low, fill with the proper spec fluid, as outlined in the Maintenance and Specifications section of your Owners Manual. If that does not help, then your best course of action would be to take your vehicle to a Lincoln or Ford dealer, or an independent shop you trust to have them inspect the transmission.

I am sure others will jump in with more advice, so keep us updated and good luck.

There’s 127,000 miles on it, I’ve owned it for 8 months, I have not change the filter or fluid, I checked fluid it’s full and red and odor smells just like transmission fluid.

Hi Shyrosier. My opinion: If the level and color are correct, then it is not a low fluid issue. Unless you have the service records of the previous owner (and they are accurate), there is no way to tell if the fluid was ever changed. I was hoping the fluid was low and filling it may have corrected the issue. But that is not the case.

Therefore (again, in my opinion), even if there is a transmission expert member who jumps in here, you will likely need to take the vehicle to a Dealer or shop who can properly diagnose and correct the issue.

I am sure others will jump in to help, so let us know how you make out and good luck.
