Hi Everyone,

Need instructions on how to remove and replace the ABS Control Module on my 1995 Town Car.

Thanks,

Hi mknight35,

The ABS module is mounted below the HCU which needs to be removed for access. The two procedures are attached. Removal of the brake lines is going to require the HCU to be bled with a scanner on replacement to remove air from the HCU.

Good luck.

Thanks for the procedures Town. I do have a scanner that can read OBDII and ABS Codes but I'm not sure what specific function I would be looking for to bleed the HCU?

Hi mknight35,

That would be a code reader not a scanner. In this instance the scanner is required to open the 4 solenoid valves in sequence to bleed the HCU. The HCU allows brake fluid to flow through to the 4 outlet brake lines that lead to individual brake calipers to bleed the brakes. But air gets trapped inside the HCU when you open remove and replace the two brake line inputs from the master cylinder so you need to bleed it. The scanner is attached to the Data Link Connector (DLC), the OBD2 port, and accesses the ABS module to open each specific solenoid valve while you bleed that brake circuit, then close that solenoid and move onto the next brake circuit until all 4 brake lines are bled.

I think a Ford dealer will charge about $85 to $145 depending on the services requested. But the scanner is a few thousand dollars. There is an Autoenginuity scanner that needs a laptop and Ford specific software for several hundred dollars.

Good luck.

Thanks Town. I have decided to take it to my local dealer and have them bleed the system.

Hi mknight35,

OK, let us know how you got along with the installation, and the bleeding. You know that you can bleed the system normally and it will work fine, except for the ABS, so you can drive to the dealer for the ABS bleed.

Good luck.
