1988 Town Car survivor from Florida

Well shes going to be a piece of driveway art until I can snag a new AOD, lost 3rd gear yesterday cruising around the `hood. Local shop wants $3500 to pull it, rebuild it then stick it back in with a few mods and a warranty.

1988 is right in th time frame of the initial electronics.
Meaning the AOD might be an EAOD.
If the transmission has electronic controls and you are replacing th transmission, you would want to find a transmission of the same code.
The electronics are different for different models and operating strategies.
Or maybe there are no electronics.

The better choice would be to rebuilt the transmission that came with the car.
The rebuild would address the mechanical parts that are worn and any electronics would be left alone.

Then adher to a regular transmission oil change schedule.
The AOD in this application does not do well with extended servicing.

I kind of like that, though I`m not really doing any modding or much customizing to this beauty. Factory parts only unless it improves on the original design.

There are sparse bits of info on the interwebs talking about R & D doing SPUD engines for experimental platforms. It may have a little history behind it

Oh Im sure its a history I`d rather not know about, looks like alot of things have been rigged up to just work good enough to sell it. I`m finding that red Alabama dirt in places it ought to not be and the dialectic grease inside alot of connectors has turned yellowish green. Some genius decided that JB weld and an assortment other misc hardware would work to secure the water pump to the timing cover and there's something not right about the cooling system. It doesnt overheat but it will not build up pressure either and no heat from the vents. But it doesnt leak and I can move it under its own power so it will have to wait for now.

I`ve replaced the main +/- wires and working on the cluster of relays under the hood. Several have the insulation shrunk back and some have loose pins.

Given the cost of rebuilding the trans I`m tempted to just buy an AOD manual and tackle it myself. The one shop willing to do the job has a reputation for putting used units in vehicles and charging a rebuild price and not backing up warranties.

Made some progress looking closer at the cornering lamps in the front fenders and how only the little bulb would illuminate. Diagnosed a bad pair of 3 prong relays just under the trim piece below the steering column and found a blown fuse. Lucked up and there are still a few NOS relays matching the number kicking around Ebay. Also ordered a few relay connector kits for the ones next to the recovery tank under the hood. Most of the wires are just stuck to the relay instead of clicking into the connector and some have exposed copper.

You`ll never convince me cars look better today than they did 30 years ago. Taken in 2025 one could almost think it was from 1995.

R.I.P. Squeak, he was a good buddy.

Aftermarket BT stereo installed using the factory amp without cutting any of the factory wiring. The original speakers work but worn out so I`m looking to upgrade both those and maybe the amplifier as well so everything works reliably.
