I might actually consider looking at dealer add ons if they did not spring them on you while with the finance person. At this point, I want to get out of the dealer. i want to read the fine print.
I completely agree. I actually like a lot of the options they give but hated having them piled on after I got the deal and/or monthly payment the way I wanted. Adding it on after the fact always pissed me off.
For the last few car purchases I figured out what I want and shopped around for decent prices and options that they'll throw at you (deductible, months/miles/years...). I figured I wanted as close as a bumper to bumper extended warranty as I drive the hell out of my cars and want it under warranty as long as I'm paying for it (at least 6 year warranty, at least 100,000 miles) and I'd like the tire/glass warranty as they're generally easier to deal with and cheaper than the insurance company options. I've found that if I show interest in these products, their 'hard sell' on everything vanishes and they simply work on closing the deal on what I'm already interested. I don't get the push on any of their other products.
That way, once I have that information, I go in with prices in mind. Both the sales guy and the finance guy know I'm interested before we even start talking about them. When we sit down to talk though, I have prices in hand that are generally WAY below theirs. For instance, for Fords/Lincolns, get a price quote at
Ziegler Auto Group that sells the Ford/Lincoln Protect plans basically at cost. It's saved me THOUSANDS of dollars on those warranties. I've been hit or miss on tire/glass warranties as they seem all over the place on what they cover and price, but I can generally negotiate their price down quite a bit by just going in with research and prices in hand. Again, it's saved me hundreds.
In fact, the only time that a dealer BEAT the Ziegler price was this last purchase. They gave me the same 'Employee' pricing on the warranty since it was the 'Employee Pricing for Everyone' deal, making it lower than Ziegler's.
TLDR: Go in informed and it will save you money. And if you buy or are at least interested in buying at least one thing, their had sell on everything else goes away.
