Hi, I have a 2004 Lincoln Navigator, the other day on the highway the truck started bogging down and bucking every time I hit the gas when it did this the battery light would flash, I got the truck home and eventually the check engine light came on, it read p0320 and had a pending thermostat code as well. I took it to my mechanic, he told me he checked the alternator, did a crankshaft sensor and a camshaft sensor, nothing worked, I asked him if he checked the grounds and harnesses and he said he did. He told me I can bring it to the dealership to see if they can figure it out but he said it could have jumped timing. Does anyone have any ideas? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Not sure if this could have any relevance at all but for the last month-ish it has a intermittent whine on idle at times, sounded like vacuum but I couldn’t find it and wasn’t too worried about it

Didn't your mechanic check to see if the timing chain was OK?

Generally on the 5.4l engine the timing chain is not the issue. It is the timing chain tensioners and guides.

The P0320 code is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that there is no current at the ignition coil group.

You might consider a different mechanic.

Yeah, with the SOHC/DOHC modular motors, 'jumped' timing is a lot more rare than many think. Tensioners and guides are the common wear items you see most often.

In my experience, this is what happens before it jumps timing...

In my opinion, all of that happens because the lack of frequent maintenance.
Oil and filter changes.

I have 222k miles on a 5.4l 3v engine that has not been opened up. Being used on a daily basis.
