Hi BL S E. I was
not defending the practice, simply explaining one of the various reasons some Dealers will do such a thing. Sort of how I would not be on the side of volcanic destruction and tsunamis if I simply explain why/how tectonic plate shifting and earthquakes happen.
And Dealers that perform these credit checks ("hard pull" or "soft pull") without alerting the prospective customer do not care about the "...ding caused by the hard pull...". So please don't shoot the messenger, who is only telling you why they do it. Not agreeing with it.
Also, things are not as simple as "...it actually is to the dealership’s advantage since they will have an SUV in their inventory and can sell easily for more profit." Lincoln/Ford is currently scheduling confirmed customer orders before Dealer stock orders. A Dealer would have some explaining to do if their supposedly "Confirmed Customer Order" were suddenly to go unsold to the named customer. And if it happens too often, their future "confirmed" orders may/will fall to the back of the line, which would not be to their advantage.
The Dealer wants to sell it to the confirmed buyer first.
Hope that makes my explanation and the reason for it a bit clearer.
Good luck.
