The New Continental has weakened sales.

Wow, this is really great! Thank you, Town. But one correction - the Genesis G90 (Continental competitor) sold 397 in May of 2017. The "Hyundai Genesis" doesn't really "sell" anymore. It's a left over model. There's a G80 and G90 right now. The G80 replaced the "Hyundai Genesis". The G90 replaced the "Hyundai Equus". Would you mind if I updated your post?

Just returned from a visit to my Lincoln dealer. Asked the sales manager if he heard from his Lincoln rep recently. He was expecting him later. I asked how the sales of the Conti were going. He said the sales were very slow. He said there is not as much interest as was expected. I said there were ads in magazines but very little on TV. Another person at the dealership said the sales were being encouraged with deals and incentives to boost sales. Everyone there was waiting for the Navigatir and hope that the TV ads will also boost the Conti. The SUV sales were much more than sedans. That is what they believe is hurting the Continental. In general sales are up almost 5% for May for Lincoln.

Oh, no problem at all. I also dropped the S-Class down to 1,275 - making things even better for the Continental. Now, of course, the Continental is a much less expensive car. But I still feel this demonstrates that Lincoln is making an impact on the industry. It's not going to be forever that the Continental is sold as such a discount. Especially considering the next generation will likely be rear wheel drive based...

I think management probably got sales people's hopes up too high. The Continental sold 1061 times in May. How do you think the sales people feel everywhere else - with the exception of Mercedes and Cadillac?

#2 Lincoln Continental sales for May 2017 are 1,061
#3 Cadillac CT6 sales for May 2017 are 1,001

#4 BMW 7 Series sales for May 2017 are 524
#5 Volvo S90 sales for May 2017 are 473
#6 Genesis G90 sales for May 2017 are 397
#7 Lexus LS sales for May 2017 are 317
#8 Audi A8/S8 sales for May 2017 are 216

After 1, 2, and 3 - that's a huge DUMP... Audi 216. Lexus? 317?! Jeez... The fact is, full size premium cars aren't selling like they used to. Neither are midsizers. They're just not what's "in" right now. And it's possible they never will be "in style" again. The more taller vehicles we have on the road, the less people are going to feel comfortable buying "cars" with such a restricted view.

Here in Florida, it's like mandatory to drive a truck jacked up to the clouds. I drive a car. I can't see a damn thing. My next vehicle will be an SUV as well - even though I really want the Continental. I'll probably end up in a Navigator of some sort.

So I think somebody told the sales people they were going to be doing "much better" after the Continental was launched. They're not. But in reality - it's doing well. In the big picture...

Yes, the Navigator will bring in more sales - probably more than the Continental... But it's an expensive vehicle so I really don't expect a plethora of sales.

Cadillac went after the younger crowd by introducing the "V" series. Maybe Lincoln should do the same. However, because of the shift to SUVs as a more practical vehicle maybe it is too late for sedans.
That's a very good point. Cadillac did aim directly at the younger crowd with the V-Series - but cars aren't selling like they used to... I wonder if Lincoln should concentrate on Crossover SUVs with a twin turbo 400hp "option"...

Not just Lincoln. The Buick dealer in Leesburg FL is advertising new LeCrosse for more than $6000 Under MSRP. That 2017 LeCrosse is a nice car, but like the Continental, I've only seen two or three. My local Mt.Dora dealer has a lot full of them. (Sells a lot of GMC's though).

If it were not that I am a Ford/Lincoln guy, I may have gone with the G80. One hell of a nice car and better equipped compared to the Continental. Three (or four) engines available. The G90 is much more than I want or need. One thing I don't like about the Genesis is they seem to change their transmissions every couple of years. When they were using the ZF transmission, the transmission fluid cost about $70 a quart. Now they are on two or three transmissions since the ZF.

Has anyone noticed how many Hyundai Sonatas on the road? Sure, it's a less expensive car, but you can pick up a Sonata Sport 2.0T Limited, loaded LOADED with more features than my Continental Select for less than 35K new. Made in the USA, unlike the Genesis made in Korea.

Like I said, I'm a Ford/Lincoln guy.

Genesis does give you a lot for your money. That G90 is a heck of a full-size luxury sedan. The G80 is an excellent mid-sizer. A full loaded Sonata is quite nice as well - and has some pretty impressive luxury features inside. The Kia Optima takes things even a step higher than that! The competition is impressive these days. But the Sonata and Optima don't give you much power. If I'm not mistaken, they're only available with four cylinders...

I have the use of a 2015 Sonata Sport 2.0Turbo Limited, with EVERY option. Compared to my Continental 3.7, the 2.0T will run circles around it, even though the 3.7 has more power. (Sure, the 2.7T and 3.0T may be faster, but I have not driven either one). (The MKZ 2.0T may also be faster, don't know). The Sonata is also more agile, as it probably weighs less. Don't know. Also gets 8mpg better around town and 4mpg better on a trip.

The Continental is sold as a luxury car, and that is why I purchased it. The 305 HP 3.7 is plenty enough for me and my use. I loved the two 98 and one 02 Continental that I previously owned. 4.7 DOHC 275 HP and I loved them.

Try adding 1,200 lbs to the Sonata to bring it up to your Continental's weight and try it again. I think you will be considerably less pleased with the Sonata.

You should have at least tried a Continental with the Reserve trim that includes 24 way seats before buying your basic model. The 2.7 liter is an awesome engine and the trans is excellent too and the fuel economy is great. If you want real performance then the 3 liter and its AWD will give you everything you would ever need and then some. Complaining about your Continental without checking on the other Continental models is unfair to the brand. Not trying out other engines is also unfair to Continental brand.

The Continental is being sold as "Quiet Luxury" and not as a stiff road burner. I bought my Continental as a quiet luxury car and I am amazed at how well Lincoln executed their vision. I am pleasantly surprised that on trips I can get 7.6 liters per 100 kilometers (31 mpg us). Around town mileage is not clear yet. It has not used any oil in 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) during the engine break-in period. It has all the safety features, very large and quiet cabin and a long list of features. For a large size luxury car it has everything I want.

The sales manager thinks it will be available for late 2018 or early 2019. He thinks people will like the size and anemities. The size class is the most popular.

When asked why I did not go with the 2.7T or the 3.0T AWD, I say that one of the FoMoCo products I had was a 2010 Ford SHO 3.5T AWD. Sure, lots of power, but the power did not impress me. Seldom, if ever used the available power.

The following are the FoMoCo cars I've owned in the past 20+ years.

1994 Thunderbird (IRS) (best driver seat I've ever had).
1997 MKZ (AWD)
1998 Continental (Tan) (put on well over 100k Miles on this one).
1998 Continental (Pearl White) (built in cell phone which ATT stopped supporting).
2002 Continental (Lincoln called color Gold). (100k when sold)
2003 Mercury Marauder.
2010 Ford SHO
2011 MKZ
2017 Continental Select (present car).

We've had two other brands, but always returned to FoMoCo. (Wife has a different brand, which she LOVES, and she would rather trade me in, vice trading in HER car). (Perhaps someday will trade her car for an MKZ 2.0Turbo, once Lincoln decides to remove the MKZ name and rename it the "Zephyr" (great Lincoln name) and to remove that Continental "lookalike" grill.

Took a trip up to Western NY last month with my other car.

1. In three weeks up there, I saw NONE. Zilch. Nada. Niente.

2. Before I went up, I had not seen any in my area of Central Florida, other than the one I sometimes see at a restaurant I go to, and come to think of it, I've not seen that one in a loooong time.

3. Since I returned to Central Florida, I've seen none.

4, Both in WNY and CFL, I have not seen any TV ads for the Continental. None in at least three or four plus months. I see ads for the MKZ but none for Continentals. I know most of you don't want to hear it, but I think FoMoCo has another Edsel on their hands.

Wish I had my 2002 (or my two 1998) Continental back. Those were GREAT cars.
