Using your navigation system, any car, any device, you may not want to use your actual home address as there may be people that will have access to your device that can find out this information when you don't want them to. Such as a gopher for a dealer who would know your address now and that you dropped the car off while at work. They would know where you live and that you are not going to be there for hours. I use the address of a nearby business, the nav instructions are just as good, but I no longer have my home address in the system.

Hi WanderingSol. Another option is to enable "Valet mode" in SYNC when dropping the vehicle off for service, valet parking etc. It locks out the personal data contained in SYNC, such as home address etc.

Personally, I don't worry about those situations, because the Dealership has all my information anyway, so a gofer would have easy access to it when my vehicle is dropped off, and I never allow my vehicles to be valet parked, not even the older ones. And in my case, my registration is in the glove compartment, so again, they would have my address if they really want it.

However, your idea is still a good one for those who may be worried about those situations.

Good luck.

Can someone use Valet Mode all the time if they are really paranoid about this?

Hi tgara. I see no reason why not, other than Valet Mode makes certain SYNC information inaccessible. As per my MKZ Owners Manual (and keeping in mind features can change from year to year):

"Valet Mode
Valet mode allows you to lock the system.
No information is accessible until the system
is unlocked with the correct PIN.
When you select valet mode a pop up
appears informing you that a four digit code
must be entered to enable and disable valet
mode. You can use any PIN you chose but
you must use the same PIN to disable valet
mode. The system asks you to input the
code.
Note: If the system is locked and you cannot
remember the PIN, please contact the
Customer Relationship Center."

So certain SYNC features will not be usable while in Valet Mode.

Good luck. 🍻

Since I am the only driver, I removed my registration and insurance documents from the glovebox and carry them on me. Anytime I use navigation, it is never from a starting/ending point near my area of residence.

Hi Peter. I can certainly understand why some people are concerned about this NAV unit home address issue. Therefore, we should all do what we feel most comfortable with and helps us sleep at night. 🤗

Good luck. 🍻

We live in a 4 year old house in a 5 year old sub-division......and we don't exist on the nav in the '23 we drove for a few hours ...I'm sure we won't in the new '22 we are getting on Saturday....so..this point is moot for me.

How old are the maps ?

Accounting for the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is probably about the best you can hope for….

Hi dayne. It all depends on which NAV map version is installed in the vehicle. Off the top of my head, the most current version is "NA 2 22". And it includes all map updates up to the end of 1st quarter 2023 (yes, the version number is confusing).
Of course, that also means the "changes" and "updates" needed to be reported. So just the fact that a road/development/business/Point of Interest etc., exists and is older than 1st quarter 2023 has no bearing on whether it may have been updated and included in the latest version.

And to make it clear, I am not defending this system or the NAV map versions, only making the information available.

Also, you do not mention what vehicle you "drove" (test drive?). However, since the Nautilus (this is the Nautilus sub-forum) has SYNC 4. And SYNC 4 gets real time map updates, as long as the subscription is kept up to date. Therefore, the old once a year "NA X XX" map updates no longer apply to the Nautilus. It gets real time/on the fly map updates. Again, as long as the subscription is kept active.

Hope this information helps and good luck. 🍻

Why not use a fictitious name? I am sure you have saved some other names and addresses. Add another address like 'Joe's bar'?

Although I'm getting older by the day, I'm still able to remember my home address so I know how to get there once I'm in town. I don't really see the need to set a 'Home' address location. The town/city name will do just fine for the near future. :D

Reasons for home address? Three that I rely on... 1: ETA; 2: Traffic problems enroute; 3: At eyeballs routing if deviate from normal.

You can set a nearby location that will address all those concerns.

It‘s sounding to me if one does not keep the navigation subscription active, it’s not available?
