Another possibility is the strut mount. The mount is located at the top of the strut. There's a bearing that allows the strut to twist (such as when turning). When the bearing freezes, the spring must reveal the stress that builds up by "snapping", instead of turning with the mount bearing. Attached is a YouTube video that describes this sound. (If this is your problem, I strongly recommend you replace both struts and strut mounts with Motorcraft parts. Aftermarket have proven to be problematic).
