I’m not disagreeing with you, but I find it odd that everything I read over the last 2 months has stated that it’s an interference engine. Have you ever heard of people commonly mistaking it for interference?

Do a compression test if there is any question.
If one or more valves are bent, they will not seal.
Valves that do not seal will not develop the needed compression.

would it need to be put back together in order to run a compression test or could I just run power and ground to the starter to run the test?

As long as the cylinder head in on the block and timing belt or chain is connected, then all you need to do is run the starter on a good battery.

It is desired to have the spark plugs removed.
