Hi forum,

Recently my area was hit by a terrible winter storm, right after that I noticed my passenger side doors’ exterior door latch and soft close doors are not functioning. (It first failed then worked for a few days and now I completely lost them)

I’m wondering have any others have experienced the same problem and what are your success with warranty claims, I did purchase extended bumper-to-bumper warranty but am not sure if it will cover labor+part+loaner vehicle or just the labor.

Thanks for viewing and hope to hear from y’all soon!

Hi TommyCai and welcome to the Lincoln Forums. Who is your "bumper-to-bumper warranty" contract holder?

What your "bumper-to-bumper warranty" will cover depends on who it is with, what your contract coverage states, and what level of coverage you have.

For example: The LincolnProtect ESP has 4 levels of coverage. If I recall correctly, only the top level "Lincoln Protect Premium Care" contract will cover the door handles/latches. In the case of those contracts, it would cover parts and labor and a rental (if you have rental coverage). And there may be a deductible, if you chose one.

So what you will need to do is take out your contract and see who the contract is with, what plan level/tier you have, the deductible etc. If it is a LincolnProtect Plan, you can contact Lincoln Concierge and they can outline your coverage.

You should also check to see if your 2017 Continental was part of the door latch recall. If it was, you may be able to have the latches replaced under the recall for free. You will need to check with your Dealer Service Department and/or Lincoln Concierge for that information.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Hi bbf2530,

Thanks for your quick response and I should've joined you a long while ago!

I'll have to check on my purchase documents to determine who it was to issue the warranty but thanks for reminding me of that.

Also, I've checked on both NHTSA and Lincoln website and confirmed that unfortunately I was not part of the door latch recall issued in 2019, nor does my symptom matches the description (The recall was about that some doors might not be fully latched and could potentially unlatch when driving). HOWEVER, I've checked on NHTSA to see previous complaints about 2017 Lincoln Continentals and noticed that 6 complaints were raised in the past 3 years to NHTSA regarding the exterior door latch failure and soft close door function failure. Apparently that these two malfunctions are somehow related to each other, and are caused by age of the vehicle instead of milage/usage of the vehicle. (They all are 2017 MY and the milage on them ranged from 20k miles to 156k miles, mine has around 54k). So now I'm more convinced that this is more of a design failure than a wear-and-tear thing, hopefully this will result in another recall in the near future.

Anyway, I'll look into my extended warranty and will go to dealer next week to seek best solution. The labors for replacing all four exterior door handles will exceed 12 hrs including painting the bottom part of the assembly. Not to mention if this can fix the soft-close-door or not. For sure I'm not feeling that I should pay for all that, so hopefully my local dealer and Ford could give me a satisfied solution on this.

I'll keep everyone posted with my solution/difficulties so you guys who experienced similar problem can have a basic idea.

Tommy
